Cause of functional dyspepsia The two most common causes of functional dyspepsia are a sensitive stomach and delayed gastric emptying (lazy stomach). At about a stomach-sensitive one is hypersensitive to stimuli from the gastro-intestinal tract. Someone, with functional dyspepsia, pain where others feel nothing. The cause is unknown. To the mucosa of the stomach and the esophagus is nothing special to see. With many people, the cause is probably a combination of several factors, including a past infection, impaired movement of the stomach, diet and psychological factors. A lazy stomach is due to a malfunction in the movement of the stomach. This one also called delayed gastric emptying. On a lazy stomach stomach the muscle pulls too little or too irregularly together. The food is thus not well pulverized and remain in the stomach longer than normal. Sometimes the food remains up to five hours or longer in the stomach instead of three hours. Sometimes the cause of a lazy stomach is not known. Stress and tension complaints can affect a lazy stomach. Probably stresses and tensions play a role. The symptoms are not serious, but can be very annoying and painful for patients. Criteria functional dyspepsia Worldwide established by medical specialists criteria when someone in the diagnosis can be made functional dyspepsia. These criteria for functional dyspepsia are: The patient suffers from one or more of the following symptoms:

  • • an unpleasant feeling of fullness after a meal;
  • • early saturation;
  • • pain in the stomach area;
  • • a burning sensation in the stomach.

These symptoms must have started at least six months when the diagnosis is functional dyspepsia. If the patient meets the criteria, the diagnosis can be made in three of those six months. If symptoms may also indicate other conditions, it must first be excluded. So don’t deny complaints and in doubt go to see the doctor! Love Pamela
